A Special Thank You

Thank you to the families who participated in the What Home Means to Me Poster Making Contest and who joined us for Pizza. I want to say how Absolutely Blessed I was to be able to spend time with you. Each one of you from the oldest artist to the youngest artist and to the beautiful Mom who helped her babies during the evening showed me that home doesn't necessarily have to be a building. It is a feeling. And you all displayed it beautifully. I saw a mom patiently guiding her 5-year-old as she made her poster, and I saw that same mom tear up as she read the beautifully written What Home Means to Me essay by her child in middle school. And I was able to witness the special bond of a High Schooler and her mom, who even though Mom could not attend, shared her art and essay through pictures so her mom could be included in what she was doing.

Mamas, do not underestimate yourselves. Your relationship with your children profoundly shapes their emotional development, identity and lifelong interpersonal patterns. From what I was blessed to witness last night You Are Doing Amazing Jobs Being Their Parent and you should be proud of yourselves. Lisa Williamson, Executive Assistant

Ensure your kids stay healthy this summer by focusing on hydration, sun safety, physical activity, and nutritious snacks.

  1. Stay Hydrated: Encourage Water Intake: Make sure your kids drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when they are active. Aim at least eight 8-ounce cups of water daily and increase this amount during physical activities.
Fun Hydration: Flavor water with fruits like lemon, berries, or cucumber to make it more appealing.
  2. Protect from the Sun: Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your child's skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Wear Protective Clothing: Dress kids in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, hats, and sunglasses to shield them from the sun.
  3. Promote Physical Activity: Outdoor Play: Encourage outdoor activities like biking, running, or playing sports. Aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
Family Activities: Make exercise a family affair by organizing dance parties, obstacle courses, or nature walks.
  4. Snack Smart Healthy Snacks: Replace chips and sugary snacks with colorful trays of fruits, vegetables, hummus, and nuts. Let kids create their own snack plates for added fun.
Frozen Treats: Offer frozen fruit pops or yogurt as a refreshing and healthy treat during hot days.
  5. Mental Well-being Start the Day with Mindfulness: Incorporate short yoga or breathing exercises to help kids feel calm and focused.  Create a Calm Space: Set up a cozy corner with books and calming activities where kids can relax when feeling overwhelmed.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your kids have a fun, active, and healthy summer while also keeping them safe from the sun and dehydration.
